What is the Colgate-Palmolive company history?
The Colgate-Palmolive company history dates back to the early 19th century before the two brands merged. William Colgate, founder of Colgate, started a scratch, soap, and candle business in New York City in 1806. After his death in 1857, the company changed its name to Colgate & Company and fell under the management of his son, Samuel Colgate. In 1866, the company introduced perfumed soap, and in 1896, toothpaste in a collapsible tube was added to the growing product list.
In 1864, B.J. Johnson opened a soap factory in Wisconsin called the B.J. Johnson Soap Company, which was later established as the Palmolive Company. In 1902, Palmolive begins using a more stylish approach to advertising, and emphasizes ingredient purity and the benefits they have.
After much success on their own and expanding their product lines, the two brands officially merged in 1928 to become the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company. In 1953, that name changed to Colgate-Palmolive, which is the name we know and love today.
Since then, the company has been expanding and acquiring more brands to continue growing their product lines and business with customers around the world. Currently, Colgate-Palmolive has been focusing on Oral Care, Personal Care, Home Care and Pet Nutrition.
